Bandits Storm Kwara Community As Hunters Repel Attack

Residents said the armed men stormed the quiet rural community at about 7:00 p.m., causing panic among villagers before local hunters mobilised to challenge them.

Ilorin,  Kwara State– Suspected bandits on Sunday evening invaded Isapa community in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State but were repelled by local hunters who confronted the attackers and prevented any casualty or abduction.

Residents said the armed men stormed the  rural community at about 7:00 p.m., causing panic among villagers before local hunters mobilised to challenge them.

A source who spoke to Afrika Eyes on Monday said the attackers fired gunshots intermittently for several minutes during the attempted invasion, but were unable to kidnap or kill anyone due to the resistance mounted by the hunters.

According to the source, the swift response by the community’s hunters forced the bandits to retreat after a brief exchange of gunfire.

“The bandits invaded Isapa tonight around 7 p.m., but we thank God they were unable to kidnap or kill anyone. The hunters in the community confronted the bandits immediately,” the source told Afrika Eyes.

“The bandits were shooting sporadically for some minutes, but the hunters stood their ground and resisted them.”

Residents reportedly ran into their homes and safe locations when the gunshots began, fearing that the attackers had come to carry out kidnappings which have become common in many rural communities across parts of Kwara South.

However, the source noted that the vigilance of the local hunters helped prevent the attack from escalating into a tragedy.

Meanwhile, it was not immediately clear if security operatives had been deployed to the community following the incident.

Communities across parts of Kwara State have in recent months raised concerns about increasing security threats, including the infiltration of suspected bandits believed to be operating from forest areas bordering neighbouring states.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
