Abandoned Project: ₦7.7Million Solar-Powered Borehole Project In Anambra Community Left Unfinished Months After Payment

Awka, Anambra State -A ₦7.7 million project meant to provide a solar-powered borehole with an overhead water tank for residents of Uffa Village in Aguluzigbo, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State has reportedly been abandoned months after funds were paid to the contractor.

Civic accountability organisation, Tracka, disclosed that the project, which was intended to improve access to clean water in the community, has remained incomplete despite the release of funds to the contractor.

According to Tracka, a mobilisation fee of ₦7.7 million was paid in September 2024 to Doson New Tech Nigeria Ltd for the construction of the solar-powered borehole with an overhead tank at Uffa Village, Aguluzigbo.

However, the organisation said that its monitoring efforts revealed that the project had been abandoned shortly after partial work was carried out.

“In September 2024, a mobilisation fee of ₦7.7 million was paid to Doson New Tech Nigeria Ltd for the construction of a solar-powered borehole with an overhead tank at Uffa Village, Aguluzigbo in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State,” Tracka said.

The group added that although the borehole was sunk and the overhead tank installed, the project was never completed and has remained abandoned since November 2024.

“We tracked and report that this project has been abandoned since November 2024 after the borehole was sunk and the tank installed,” the organisation stated.

The development has raised concerns among residents of the community, who had hoped that the project would provide a reliable source of potable water.

Access to clean water remains a challenge in several rural communities across Nigeria, making projects such as solar-powered boreholes crucial for improving public health and living conditions.

Tracka has therefore called on the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, which it identified as the implementing agency responsible for the project, to publicly clarify the status of the project and ensure its completion.

“We call on the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, the implementing agency, to provide the public with details of this project and facilitate its completion,” the group said.

The organisation emphasised that government-funded community projects must be properly monitored and completed in order to ensure that public funds are not wasted and that citizens benefit from development initiatives meant to improve their lives.

Residents of Uffa Village are now urging the authorities and the implementing agency to intervene and ensure that the project is completed so the community can finally benefit from the promised water supply.
