AAC Picks Sowore As 2027 Presidential Flag Bearer In Unanimous Vote

Abuja, Nigeria — Human rights activist and publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, has been declared the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) for the 2027 general elections following a unanimous endorsement by party delegates.
The declaration was made on Tuesday during the party’s presidential primaries held in Abuja, where delegates from across the country converged to decide the party’s flag bearer.
Sowore emerged unopposed, securing the backing of all accredited delegates and party leaders present at the exercise, in reaffirmation of his dominance and ideological grip within the AAC.
He was subsequently presented with the party’s flag amid chants and celebrations by supporters who filled the venue.
Speaking shortly after accepting the nomination, Sowore reiterated that the AAC was founded to build what he described as “a new Nigeria,” free from entrenched corruption and systemic failure.
He commended party members for their “sacrifice, perseverance, and belief,” noting that their commitment has sustained the party’s vision despite political and economic challenges.
“Our mission remains clear,” Sowore said. “We are determined to confront corruption, bad governance, insecurity, and the deepening economic hardship facing millions of Nigerians.”
The primaries, which drew notable figures within the party, also marked a significant step in AAC’s early preparations for the 2027 elections, as political activities gradually intensify across the country.
Sowore’s arrival at the venue earlier in the day was greeted with loud cheers, with supporters praising his long-standing activism and consistent criticism of government failures, particularly on issues of accountability, governance, and social justice.
The development comes months after Sowore publicly declared his intention to contest again for Nigeria’s highest office, insisting that the country must break away from what he termed the “same failed political class.”
He made the disclosure during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, where he confirmed that the AAC would conduct its primaries ahead of the election cycle.
At the time, Sowore avoided assuming automatic candidacy, maintaining that the decision rested with party delegates — a process that has now culminated in his unanimous emergence.
With his emergence, Sowore is set to once again test his political strength on the national stage, campaigning on a platform that challenges Nigeria’s political establishment and promises sweeping reforms.
