11 Dead in Enugu-Onitsha Expressway Tanker Explosion

Enugu State- No fewer than 11 people were killed on Saturday when a petrol-laden tanker exploded along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in a devastating accident attributed to brake failure.

It was gathered that the tanker reportedly lost control, tumbled, and spilled its flammable content, triggering a massive explosion that claimed lives and left others injured.

Meanwhile, Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, visited the scene to assess the situation and expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.

He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and promised that the state government would take measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“We will enforce road safety regulations and address the poor condition of this federal road that has contributed to such incidents,” Governor Mbah said.

The governor also directed the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the State Ministry of Transport to ensure that all tankers transporting inflammable substances in the state are equipped with anti-spill locks to minimize risks during accidents.

FRSC Sector Commander Franklin Agbakoba confirmed that the accident resulted from the tanker’s brake failure.

He stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion.

Governor Mbah assured the public that the government would work with law enforcement agencies to uncover the root cause of the incident and provide lasting solutions to ensure road safety in the state.
