‘I’m Still In Charge’: Obasa Rejects Impeachment, Denies Corruption Claims, Accuses Police Of Complicity

The former Speaker alleged that his impeachment was orchestrated during his absence in the United States.

Ikeja, Lagos State- Mudashiru Obasa, the recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has declared that he remains the legitimate leader of the legislative body.

Addressing supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge in Ikeja on Saturday, Obasa dismissed his impeachment, alleging procedural irregularities and accusing the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of aiding his removal.

Obasa, who was impeached in early January by 32 lawmakers over allegations of gross misconduct and financial mismanagement, maintained that the process violated constitutional provisions.

“I remain the Speaker of the Lagos Assembly,” he asserted, adding, “I am not disturbed, I am not afraid.”

The former Speaker alleged that his impeachment was orchestrated during his absence in the United States.

He claimed that over 200 security agents, led by the police commissioner, invaded the Assembly complex and his residences in Agege and Ikeja, locking his family indoors.

“We did not invite policemen when former Speaker Rt. Hon. Jokotola Pelumi or Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, the former Deputy Speaker, were removed. Why was it different in my case?” Obasa questioned, suggesting foul play.

Obasa also dismissed allegations of financial mismanagement, including claims that he spent N16 billion on gate construction.

“Is it the wall of Jericho?” he mockingly retorted, citing the need for credible evidence to substantiate accusations against him.

He added, “An innocent person should not be discredited. The Lagos State House of Assembly is above common standards of excellence.”

Despite the controversy, Obasa expressed gratitude to the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“The governor is my brother, and he always calls me his younger brother,” he said.

Obasa’s impeachment paved the way for his former deputy, Mojisola Meranda, to assume the role of Speaker.

Her emergence reportedly received the blessing of the GAC, a powerful political group within the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
