The suspect was caught red-handed around 1:30 am on Wednesday by local vigilantes while in the act of cutting the cables
Ilorin, Kwara State- A private security guard employed at the University of Ilorin, Idris Ibrahim Kayode, has been apprehended for allegedly vandalizing armoured cables powering streetlights within the university community.
The suspect was caught red-handed around 1:30 am on Wednesday by local vigilantes while in the act of cutting the cables.
Kayode was promptly handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation.
Speaking on the incident, the NSCDC’s Public Relations Officer, Ayoola Michael, confirmed that the state Commandant, Dr. Umar Muhammed, has directed a thorough investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), recently emphasized the need to protect new electrical facilities from theft and vandalism.
This move comes in response to the university’s investment in alternative power sources following the recent increase in electricity tariffs.
Prof. Egbewole revealed that the tariff hike by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company had raised the university’s monthly electricity bill from N70 million to N230 million.
However, he called the situation “unsustainable” and highlighted the urgent need for a thorough reassessment of current electricity usage practices.
