BBYDI To Create Awareness Programme On ‘Safe Schools’ In 50 Schools Across Kwara

Mr Olasupo said community and religious leaders must assist security agencies with information and intelligence gathering, which is key to preventing some of these attacks on schools.

 

Ilorin, Kwara State– The Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI) has joined the rest of the world to mark this year’s Global Action Week for Education on Wednesday at the Ministry of Education in Ilorin, Kwara State.

In a statement signed by BBYDI’s Executive Director, Abideen Olasupo, said the Global Action Week for Education (GAWE) is a worldwide annual event organized to raise awareness on the importance of education for all.

During the week, hundreds of local, national, regional, and global civil society organizations and millions of people all over the world join together to defend and advocate for the right to inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all, and contributing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal, SDG4.

Mr Olasupo said as part of the programmes, the organization will hold an awareness programme on ‘Safe Schools’ in 50 schools across the three senatorial districts of Kwara State. To also hold a Community Townhall meeting involving relevant stakeholders to discuss how to keep our schools safe.

According to him ” We will organise workshops for teachers and Community champions on the process of implementing minimum standards for safe schools, the roles of teachers and community members in safeguarding students, school emergency preparedness and response and evacuation drill. We will also distribute safety kits to schools in the State.”

He reiterates that the programmes would be in collaboration with the Kwara State Ministry of Education and Global Campaign for Education.

Meanwhile, BBYDI has called on the Kwara state government to take more measures to improve security within and around all schools, especially schools in isolated and vulnerable areas where attackers can get away easily.

In the event of an attack on schools, leading to the destruction of school facilities, he appealed to the government to ensure quick fixing of the facilities and Increase funding for education.

Mr Olasupo said, community and religious leaders must assist security agencies with information and intelligence gathering, which is key to preventing some of these attacks on schools.

He said bullying has been identified as a form of violence that makes schools unsafe for children. He, therefore, call on the government to implement policy and take drastic actions to end bullying and other related vices at schools.
