Open Letter To Attorney General And Minister Of Justice On Sowore’s Trumped-Up Treason Trial

As a human rights activist deeply involved in the pro-democracy struggle, Sowore played a pivotal role

Dear Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN,

I trust this letter finds you in good health. I am reaching out to you due to the pressing matter concerning Omoyele Sowore and the trumped-up treason trial he has been subjected to under the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), has faced severe charges following his advocacy for the #RevolutionNow protest scheduled for August 5, 2019. He was unjustly detained at midnight on August 3, 2019, enduring five months of incarceration by the Department of State Services.

As a human rights activist deeply involved in the pro-democracy struggle, Sowore played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. I write to you as a concerned member of our shared community, recognizing your commitment to justice and human rights.

Given your esteemed position as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, I implore you to use your influence to review Sowore’s case. It is my humble plea that you advise the Federal Government to drop all charges against him.

Sowore, who has sacrificed for our nation and significantly contributed to the democratic process, has been separated from his family since 2019. I urge you to leverage your authority to ensure a fair resolution, considering the lack of substantial evidence presented during the year-long trial.

Your intervention to withdraw all charges against Sowore would not only serve justice but also alleviate the hardship endured by him and his family. His prolonged incarceration has not only affected him personally but has also had broader implications, causing setbacks for many who relied on his support.

I appeal to your sense of justice and the principles you stand for to uphold the rule of law. Sowore’s due process and fair trial rights have been consistently violated, contravening international and regional standards.

In your capacity as the AGF, you possess the authority to drop the charges against Sowore. I urge you to facilitate his return to the United States, allowing his wife and two children to reunite with him after enduring over four years of separation.

I appreciate your attention to this matter and trust that your intervention will contribute to a just resolution.

Sincerely,

Buhari Olanrewaju Ahmed
