NLC, TUC Calls Off Nationwide Strike
The unions accused the Imo State government and the police in the state of sponsoring thugs and giving them a cover to brutalise Mr Ajaero.
Abuja, Nigeria– The organized labour in the country has decided to suspend the nationwide indefinite strike that commenced on Tuesday, November 14.
The decision to call off the strike came after a crucial meeting between the leaders of the organized labour and top government officials.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Minister of Labour and Employment Simon Lalong took the lead in engaging with the leaders of organized labour to address the concerns that led to the initiation of the nationwide strike.
The strike, which caused disruptions in various sectors across the country, was lifted just hours after the fruitful discussions between the government representatives and the labour leaders. The negotiations focused on addressing the grievances raised by organized labour, including issues related to workers’ welfare, economic conditions, and other concerns.
The decision to suspend the strike was announced jointly by the leaders of the organized labour and the government officials involved in the negotiations. Speaking at a press conference following the resolution, Nuhu Ribadu emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the legitimate concerns of the labour unions.
“We recognize the importance of a harmonious relationship between the government and the labour force. Our discussions were constructive, and we have reached agreements that address the core issues raised by the organized labour,” stated Ribadu.
Minister Simon Lalong echoed these sentiments, expressing optimism about the collaborative efforts moving forward. “It is crucial for both parties to work together in the best interests of the nation. We are committed to creating an environment that fosters dialogue and resolution,” said Lalong.
Recalled that the NLC president, Joe Ajaero was attacked and brutalised while preparing to lead a protest against the Imo State government over alleged non-payment of civil servants’ salaries for months and inhumane treatment of some government workers in the state.
