Port Harcourt, Rivers State–  The chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly has been engulfed in flames amidst rumours of an impending impeachment move against Governor Similanayi Fubara, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

It was gathered that some thugs in a white Hilux van invaded the assembly complex at about 9 pm, disarmed the security personnel on duty and allegedly carried out the act.

Eyewitnesses reported plumes of thick smoke billowing from the legislative building, prompting immediate emergency response efforts from local fire departments.

“The situation escalated rapidly, with the fire consuming significant portions of the assembly chamber. Firefighters and first responders are working tirelessly to control the inferno, but the extent of the damage is not yet known.

“The impeachment threat against Governor Fubara has been a contentious issue, further intensifying the political landscape in Rivers State. While it is too early to establish a connection between the fire and the rumoured impeachment, the timing of this disaster is undeniably suspicious,” he said.

Security has been heightened around the Assembly complex, and law enforcement agencies are on high alert to ensure the safety of citizens and government officials.

Governor Fubara’s administration and Rivers State House of Assembly have yet to release an official statement in response to the incident.
