Dr. Oladebeye Advocates Sustainable Infrastructures To Combat Climate Change

Prioritize the construction of green buildings with energy-efficient designs and efficient water and waste

Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State–  – Dr. Dayo Oladebeye, former Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti and current Associate Professor at Olomilua University of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, has urged the development of sustainable infrastructures in Nigerian tertiary institutions as a critical response to the threats of climate change.

Speaking at the Annual Public Lecture of the Directorate of Physical Planning, Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, Dr. Oladebeye emphasized the need for sustainable construction practices.

A mechanical engineer by training, Dr. Oladebeye explained the importance of sustainable infrastructure in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy sources, and enhancing resilience in the face of climate change impacts.

He called on both government authorities and educational institutions to prioritize the construction of green buildings with energy-efficient designs and efficient water and waste management systems.

He also stressed the significance of moving away from fossil fuel-powered vehicles and the importance of implementing sustainable wastewater treatment methods.

Dr. Oladebeye encouraged the creation of urban green spaces for recreational purposes to improve overall sustainability.

In addition to the infrastructural changes, the academic recommended a holistic approach to sustainability, including the development of sustainable infrastructure plans, the integration of sustainability into academic curricula, and the provision of professional development and mentorship opportunities for students to actively engage in sustainability initiatives through clubs, organizations, and projects.

The Director of Physical Planning at Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, QS Oyetunde Oyelola, also emphasized the need for architects’ employment and the provision of relevant software to aid in project supervision and implementation. He highlighted the Directorate’s focus on developing smart buildings that incorporate future technology while preserving functionality and aesthetics.

The event saw the participation of various academic leaders, including Dr. A.I. Ebeloku, Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ile-Oluji, and Dr. Taofeeq Adekunle Abdulhameed, Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ayede, Oyo State, as well as Deputy Rectors and other Principal Officers from the host institution.

The 7th Public Lecture was held at the Twin Auditorium and celebrated the collaborative efforts aimed at fostering sustainability in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
