Calabar, Cross River State – The abductors of Mrs. Rosemary Ofem, a fish seller hailing from Cross River State, have demanded a hefty N5 million ransom for her safe release.

Mrs Ofem was kidnapped on September 26, 2023, while travelling in a boat along Ikang in the Bakassi Local Council. She was on her way to purchase fish for her business.

It was gathered that Mrs Ofem, along with several others, embarked on a routine journey to procure fish for sale, where armed abductors ambushed their boat, snatching Mrs Ofem and her companions.

A close family member of the victim, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident to the newsmen on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

According to the family member, Mrs Ofem had left her home in Ugep, Yakurr Local Council, to travel to Ikang when the kidnapping occurred.

“On Sunday, October 1, they offered a special service for her in the Church of God Mission, Ugep, where she worships,” he said.

“The kidnappers called the next day, October 2, and asked her to communicate with her family

“They demanded N5 million despite the woman’s cry and plea. Where is she going to get the money from, when it is only fish she sells to feed her family? Where is her husband going to get that kind amount of money? She is even the breadwinner of the family

“She wasn’t alone. She was kidnapped from a boat with others who also went to buy fish.”
