A 20-year-old man, Lawal Hammed, has been arrested for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl in Ogun State.

Hammed, a native of Aiyepe-Ijebu,  was said to have committed the act following a complaint lodged by the victim’s parent.

In a statement by the Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Omolola Odutola, the parent said that the suspect had been sexually harassing his daughter for a while. However, he did not mention what actions he took to protect his daughter from the suspect.

The PPRO stated that the underage victim has been taken to Odogbolu General Hospital for a thorough medical examination and is also receiving emotional therapy and counselling.

“The law of defilement in Nigeria is trite, Section 218 of the Criminal Code Act. The section states that any person who has unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 13 years is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life. This is for the determination of the court.

“As soon as the investigation is concluded, the suspect, 20-year-old Hammed, who is deemed to know the law by virtue of being above 18yrs, will be charged to Court on the strength of material evidence from forensic examination,” Odutola said.
